Welcome
to the Silo House
It began with an idea…
In 2014, we began work with Greenspur, a Virginia-based award-winning architecture firm, to design the Silo House. Greenspur shared our vision for a more ecological, communal and artistic future. Our goal was to create a home that was aesthetically striking while still respecting the local Virginia vernacular.
Surrounded by pasture, forest and mountain, it was to be both modern and rustic, melding the indoor and the outdoors. We needed a home that could accommodate our growing families and large gatherings, but it also needed to feel cozy and intimate enough for a solitary writer’s retreat or a couples weekend getaway.
On top of this, we wanted to be on the forefront of sustainable design in terms of energy use and materials science - all on a modest budget! After dozens of design iterations, and with support from our creative, accommodating builder Abrahamse & Company, the Silo House was completed in the summer of 2017.
Set at the apex of a 33 acre property
The Silo House is three buildings (the Main House, the Tower and the Silo) linked by upper and lower decks with sweeping Blue Ridge views. The Silo building is a grain silo turned into a two and a half story light-filled building complete with maple flooring, modern climate control and a self contained bathroom and kitchenette.
The Great Room
The Great Room upstairs in the Main House has a fireplace, telescope, and record player, and it is decorated with antique maps, local art, and lots of books. With large picture windows and lots of natural light, it’s a wonderful gathering place and place of quiet retreat.
A Kitchen For Cooks
The state-of-the-art, open kitchen features a picture window overlooking pastures and rolling hills, a gas stove, and modern appliances (refrigerator, microwave, coffee machine, etc.). It is also equipped with cooking pans & utensils. This space calls out to passionate cooks and enthusiastic diners.
Unwind
Our house is meant to enhance appreciation of the surrounding landscapes at every turn. Therefore, outdoor spaces become an extension of the lived experience. Our extensive front porch is shaded by a pergola and equipped with reclining chairs that overlook the gardens, fields and mountains beyond. A second porch upstairs is perfect for sunset views.
Relax
There are five queen beds across three independent bedrooms (one en suite in the Silo) and two lofted bedrooms. Each sleeping space has a unique feel and décor, as well as mountain, trees and/or pasture views. There is one full bathroom, one bathroom with a ship-shower, and one half bathroom in the Silo, as well as an outdoor shower.
